For safety the flame is shielded behind a metal plate AND a diamond mesh screen. This double layer of protection stops debris (including wood chips) from clogging up the gas outlet.
But that's not all on the safety front, it even includes a low oxygen depletion system (ODS) - a fantastic feature that automatically shuts off the heater if the level of oxygen in the room even approaches an unsafe level for human occupation.
